Business English (Optional course)
for the students of natural science and engineering specialties
The aim of this course is to provide students with such a level of communicative competence and active possessing of a business foreign language that will guarantee them an effective communication in their academic and professional environments. It can be applied in educational and informative activities, during direct and indirect communication with the representatives of foreign countries and to increase their professional qualification level.
By the end of the course students are expected to know:
basic language functions required for business communication, the forms of their expression as well as understanding and producing a wide range of texts dealing with business sphere;
different corporate cultures, in particular, business contexts and their interrelation;
cross-cultural communication;
strategies of effective reading, listening, studying, searching and retrieving information from different resources, including the Internet.
By the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
behave properly in typical business situations;
conduct effective telephone conversations;
negotiate about a business trip, including booking tickets, reserving a hotel room, making decisions on problematic questions with a receiving party;
understand the discussions on the themes related to their activity sphere, exchange obtained experience, discuss their achievements;
compile the detailed report on the completed tasks, internships or studies in a company;
conduct effective meetings, express and support their opinion, estimate alternative proposals, put forward hypotheses and respond to the hypotheses of other participants;
process and fill informative letters, registration forms, forms and statements;
retrieve information, ideas, point of views from the specialized sources within the range of their activity;
make distinct and consistently developed presentation with underlining meaningful moments and corresponding additional details;
write effective CV and other documents for job application;
conduct an effective free interview, avoiding prepared questions, perceiving and reacting on spontaneous answers, taking initiative in an interview, formulating and developing ideas;
respond adequately and correctly
to simple announcements, reports and instructions.
