Foreign (English) language for academic purposes The course aimed for Master students in all areas of specialisms allows future scientists and instructors develop the communicative language competence and strategies necessary for adequate behavior in academic and educational environment. The main aim of the course is to develop general and academic communicative language competence necessary for conducting scientific research using foreign sources of information to write thesis, including writing articles, preparing for lectures, and presenting the findings in a foreign language both in speaking and in writing. The focus is on individual work of Master students, which will foster their involvement in the learning process throughout life and self-education. Active utilization of procedural knowledge (study skills) and reflection (self-analysis) makes the basis for effective and autonomous life-long learning. By the end of the course students are expected to be able to: - use written correspondence skills effectively (writing e-mails, academic correspondence, writing summaries and abstracts for professional literature, compiling business documents (reports, reviews etc.), writing CV and other documents for job application and job hunting); - use various reading skills (for search, for comprehension, critical reading) for effective search and further use of the information in their own research (referencing: quotations, paraphrase, summary); - use speaking skills effectively (both monologue and dialogue) in academic environment (presentations, interpretation of visual aids accompanying texts, participation in scientific meetings and seminars). |
